Patrick REY (TSE) – “Platform Competition and Innovation ”

Abtract: We study how platform competition affects third-party innovation. The commissions charged to innovators are shown to exceed those maximizing consumer surplus or platforms’ joint profit (and, thus, welfare) whenever raising one commission reduces innovation on rival platforms, as is the case when innovation entails economies of scope or demand-side synergies–in an illustrative setting in which some developers can port their innovation at no cost, innovation is progressively choked-off as their proportion increases. These insights suggest that fostering platform competition or interoperability may have unintended effects; within-platform app-store competition, together with appropriate access conditions, may be more effective.
