Samuel BENTOLILA (CEMFI) – “Does Dual Vocational Education Pay Off?”

Abstract: We use a novel dataset to study the impact of dual vocational education (VE) on the labor market outcomes of three cohorts of graduates in the Spanish region of Madrid in 2014-2016. Our control group is made of students in school-based VE, who spend less time as interns at firms. We control for observable characteristics and for selection via an instrumental variable based on differences in commuting times to schools offering either track. We find a causal, positive, and large differential effect of dual VE on days of work and earnings in the first two years after graduating. There is however no impact on qualitative aspects, such as part-time work or having a permanent contract.
