Roxana FERNANDEZ (CREST) – “Patent Portfolio Choices: An Empirical Analysis of the U.S. Semiconductor Industry”

Abstract: Over the last decades, patent portfolios have become an important tool for firms to compete and secure their position in the market. However, the existing empirical literature has largely ignored the role of portfolio composition as an instrument to explain firms’ strategic behavior. In the present paper, I study how firms of different sizes choose their technologies in relation to other firms. By doing this, I aim to shed new light on the underlying mechanisms driving the observed evolution of firms’ patent portfolios. I focus on data from the U.S. semiconductor industry and model the probability that firms of different sizes invest in a technology depending on the of other firms. The semiconductor industry provides an excellent setting given its rapid pace of technological change and the complexity of their technologies that make firms heavily interrelated.
