Nora WAITKUS (Université de Tilbourg and LSE) – Wealth Differences: Assessing Macro-Level and Micro-Level Variations Across National Contexts

Abstract:

Research on cross-national differences in wealth levels and inequality so far fails to establish why these differences exist. Inequality in marketable wealth is equally high in very different national contexts (for example the US, Norway and Germany), however, the function of wealth diverges as welfare provision, labor markets and educational systems vary in their degree of (de-)commodification etc. Despite these macro-level differences, micro-level evidence on wealth gaps between different socio-demographic groups have not been systematically addressed across national contexts: in this presentation, I will link these two processes and provide ample evidence not only on variations of wealth levels and inequality across countries, but link them to the micro-level patterns of inclusion and exclusion of different socio-demographic groups from wealth.
