Roberto Galbiati (Sciences Po) -“Les Liaisons Dangereuses: Politics and Wealth in the Florentine Republic” with Marianna Belloc and Francesco Drago.
Abstract:“We study the relation between individual (household) wealth and access to political offices. We have data on the Florentine political system and family wealth in the renaissance: the name of all the officers over 100 years and family wealth declarations in two years for every florentine household with wealth>0. The florentine system was characterized by a lottery: offices were extracted randomly. We show that this system is such that usual results on wealth and access to political offices do not hold until the Medicis family become so rich to divert the system. We explain how and why they corrupted the system using data on their family network.”
