SUMMARY:Dorothea KÜBLER (WZB Berlin) - "The gender gap in gender-blind college admissions"
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire Microéconomie : Tous les mercredis\nHeure : 12h15 – 13h30\nDate : 29/05/2024\nSalle : 3001 \nDorothea KÜBLER (WZB Berlin) – “The gender gap in gender-blind college admissions” \nCV : “We examine China’s gender-blind college admission process and uncover a significant gender gap: equally qualified female students are significantly less likely to apply to and be admitted to elite universities compared to their male counterparts. By combining administrative and survey data\, we show that this disparity is not driven by differences in strategic sophistication\, confidence\, competitiveness\, or risk aversion. Instead\, it is primarily explained by women’s stronger preference for geographically close and education-focused universities. The survey data reveal that these preferences are less reflective of genuine aspirations and more influenced by parental expectations. Self-reports by students indicate that parents guide their daughters more towards nearby and education schools compared to their sons. Moreover\, women’s actual application decisions are more affected by parental expectations than men’s. The findings demonstrate that gender-specific parental expectations and social norms can lead to gender differences in an admissions system that is designed to be meritocratic and gender-neutral.” \nOrganisateurs : \nJulien COMBE (Pôle d’Economie du CREST)\nYves Le YAOUNQ (Pôle d’Economie du CREST)\nMatias NUNEZ (Pôle d’Economie du CREST) \nCommanditaires :\nCREST \n
