SUMMARY:Samuel BENTOLILA (CEMFI) - "Does Dual Vocational Education Pay Off?"
DESCRIPTION:Applied Micro Seminar : Every Tuesday \nTime: 12:15 pm – 13:30 pm\nDate: 29 th of November 2022\nRoom : 3001 \nSamuel BENTOLILA (CEMFI) – “Does Dual Vocational Education Pay Off?” \nAbstract: We use a novel dataset to study the impact of dual vocational education (VE) on the labor market outcomes of three cohorts of graduates in the Spanish region of Madrid in 2014-2016. Our control group is made of students in school-based VE\, who spend less time as interns at firms. We control for observable characteristics and for selection via an instrumental variable based on differences in commuting times to schools offering either track. We find a causal\, positive\, and large differential effect of dual VE on days of work and earnings in the first two years after graduating. There is however no impact on qualitative aspects\, such as part-time work or having a permanent contract. \nJoint work : Antonio Cabrales (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid) and Marcel Jansen (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) \nOrganizers:\nBenoît SCHMUTZ (Pôle d’économie du CREST)\nRoland RATHELOT (Pôle d’économie du CREST)\nSponsors:\nCREST \n

SUMMARY:Chris BAIL : « Creating a New Paradigm for Research on Social Media »
DESCRIPTION:Sociology Seminar: Thursdays\nTime: 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – \nDate: 29th of November 2022\nPlace: Amphi 200 + zoom \nChris Bail : « Creating a New Paradigm for Research on Social Media » \nAbstract : Scholars who study social media face a range of challenges including a lack of access to high quality data and an inability to conduct experiments in real world settings. Because of these challenges\, most research examines the small amount of data that social media companies make available to scholars in a descriptive manner. This situation severely limits the capacity of researchers to examine how the design of social media systems shapes human behavior. I propose a new paradigm for social media research wherein scholars collaborate to create their own social media platforms for scientific research. I present two recent field experiments conducted on such platforms to demonstrate their promise. The first field experiment examines how anonymity shapes political polarization. The second field experiment examines how gendered avatars shape political persuasion. I conclude by offering insights about how these types of platforms could be scaled to examine a much broader range of topics via an open-source software collaboration between a large group of researchers\, not unlike CERN. \n  \nHadrien LE MER\, Etienne OLLION\, Patrick PRÄG (Pôle de Sociologie du CREST) \nSponsors :\nCREST \n
