SUMMARY:Torkyld LINGSTAD (University of Oslo) - "Social change\, genetics and the gender revolution. Results from analyses of 26000 Norwegian twins born 1915-1991"
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Sociology Seminar: Thursdays\nTime: 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm\nDate: 6th of February 2020\nPlace: Room 3105\, ENSAE.\nTorkyld LINGSTAD (University of Oslo) – “Social change\, genetics and the gender revolution. Results from analyses of 26000 Norwegian twins born 1915-1991”\nAbstract : The heritability of educational attainment varies with time and national context\, and responds to policy and is linked to income mobility. The heritability of education can then serve as a measurement device for changes in opportunity structures. We estimate biometric ACE models using data on the educational attainments of 26000 Norwegian twins born 1915-1991\, and show how the importance of genetic and social factors changes over cohorts. Our results documents the path Norwegian society took through the 20th Century\, through three main phases of social change: First\, opportunity structures opens up only for men. Second\, early gender-equal families allow women to participate. In the third phase\, we document less selection on individual differences in mass education\, and universal gender equality norms points to male-female convergence.\nOrganizers : \nJeanne GANAULT\, Céline GOFFETTE\, Sébastien MICHIELS\, Sander WAGNER (Laboratoire de sociologie quantitative – CREST)\nSponsors :\nCREST\n\n
