SUMMARY:Vincenzo DENICOLO (Bologna) - "Transparency and competition for influence"
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire Microéconomie : Tous les mercredis\nHeure : 12h15 – 13h30\nDate : 12/11/2025\nSalle : 3001 \nVincenzo DENICOLO (Bologna) – “Transparency and competition for influence” \nCV : We study the impact of mandatory disclosure of contributions paid by interested third parties to decision-makers such as doctors\, politicians\, or financial advisors. While mandatory disclosure is commonly viewed as a means of reducing potential conflicts of interest\, our analysis reveals less benign outcomes when multiple third parties attempt to influence decision-makers in opposing directions. In this case\, transparency enables competing third parties to establish separate spheres of influence\, where the opposing efforts of rivals do not attenuate their influence. Consequently\, decision makers’ choices become more polarized. We apply this theory to the market for anticoagulants\, using data on doctors’ prescriptions\, and payments made by pharmaceutical companies to doctors in the United States before and after the Physician Sunshine Act mandated payment disclosure. \nOrganisateurs : \nJulien COMBE (Pôle d’Economie du CREST)\nYves Le YAOUANQ (Pôle d’Economie du CREST)\nMatias NUNEZ (Pôle d’Economie du CREST) \nCommanditaires :\nCREST \n
