SUMMARY:Ashley MEARS (University of Amsterdam) - "Learning to Like the Likes and the Hate: The Labor of Internet Fame in the New Attention Economy"
DESCRIPTION:Sociology Seminar \nTime: :12:15 pm – 13:30 pm \nDate: 18th of september\nRoom : 3049 \n  \nAshley MEARS (University of Amsterdam) – “Learning to Like the Likes and the Hate: The Labor of Internet Fame in the New Attention Economy” \n  \nAbstract : “What’s it like being internet famous? In the traditional fame game\, public visibility and reputation were tightly coupled\, but these can be decoupled in the new media attention economy. We illustrate this with an immersive ethnography of virality. Going viral on social media can be a destabilizing experience\, given the problems of hyper-visibility\, context collapse\, and hateful commentary from unknown audiences. Yet many people pursue online virality\, reporting the experience to be pleasurable\, even addictive\, akin to getting high on drugs. This paper outlines a phenomenology of fame in the digital age\, drawing from affect theory\, STS\, and Howard Becker’s classic analysis of getting high on marijuana”. \nThe paper is joint work with Taylor Beauvais \nLien zoom : https://zoom.us/j/97308676368?pwd=hE2aXh8Hf2orL8DAoLcg2RaSbMckHg.1 \n  \nOrganizers:\nPaola TUBARO (Pôle sociologie CREST) \nPatrick PRÄG (Pôle sociologie CREST) \nJulia NICOLAS  (Pôle sociologie CREST) \nSponsors:\nCREST \n
