SUMMARY:Diederik BOERTIEN (CED) - "Wealth Inequality in Spain. A Sociological Perspective"
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Sociology Seminar: Thursdays\nTime: 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm\nDate: 8 th of October 2020\nPlace: Visio\nDiederik BOERTIEN (CED) – “Wealth Inequality in Spain. A Sociological Perspective“\nAbstract : Wealth inequality is on the rise across the globe. Existing research has shown how especially the very wealthy keep increasing their share of the pie. Explanations have focused on the factors allowing the wealthy to accumulate more wealth\, including returns to investments\, CEO pay\, offshore wealth and (low) taxation. In Spain\, studies of levels of wealth have focused on the role of housing\, which put forward processes that are relevant for larger parts of the population such as access to housing and housing prices. In this paper\, we perform various decomposition exercises to get a first insight into the possible role different processes have played in the pronounced increase in wealth inequality observed in Spain between 2002 and 2014. Subsequently\, we focus on how these processes have affected socioeconomic and gender differences in wealth.\n\n\nOrganizers : \nJeanne GANAULT\, Etienne OLLION\, Felix TROPF (Laboratoire de sociologie quantitative – CREST)\nSponsors :\nCREST\n\n
