SUMMARY:Andrea WEBER (Central European University ) - "What can we learn from temporary layoffs and recall hires about firm and worker expectations?"
DESCRIPTION:Applied Micro seminar : Every Tuesday \nTime: 12:15 pm – 13:30 pm\nDate: 11 th of October 2022\nRoom : 3001 \nAndrea WEBER (Central European University ) – “What can we learn from temporary layoffs and recall hires about firm and worker expectations?” \nAbstract: In this paper we argue that temporary layoffs and recalls reveal\nimportant information on firms’ expectations of business development and\nworkers’ expectations concerning employment opportunities and wages. We\nexploit a match of linked employer employee data and unemployment\nrecords from Austria\, which contain information on temporary layoffs and\nexpected recall dates. We study the type of firms that use temporary\nlayoffs and examine variation in the layoff size and the share of\ntemporary layoffs on hiring patterns. On the workers’ side we examine\nhow their own and their co-workers’ expected recall dates affect search\noutcomes. \nOrganizers:\nBenoît SCHMUTZ (Pôle d’économie du CREST)\nRoland RATHELOT (Pôle d’économie du CREST)\nSponsors:\nCREST \n
