Giusepe BERTOLA “ (Université de Turin) Distribution, Distortions, and Market Integration Dynamics”
Abstract A domestic policy wedge corrects labor market imperfections and/or redistributes welfare across differently wealthy agents. When its country-specific politico-economic determination depends on another wedge, indexing capital market integration with the rest of the world, tighter international integration influences policy through both race-to-the-bottom and beggar-thy-neighbor channels, with teform and welfare implications that depend sharply and realistically on country-specific political and structural features. In a dynamic setting, changes over time of the international wedge influence consumption, current accounts, and measured productivity in non-obvious and realistic ways.
