Abstract: We analyze the intensity of competition between two major online travel agencies (OTA), Booking and Expedia, and the own hotel’s website (DON). The estimation of the substitution patterns between these channels could provide an indirect measure of the potential anti-competitiveness of price parity clauses. With a unique dataset from two major hotel chains in Scandinavia, containing prices, volumes and channel of reservation between 2012 and 2016, we exploit the particular framework of a boycott led by hotels between 2012 and 2014 on Expedia. Our first results indicate that (i) most consumers are loyal to Expedia ; (ii) remaining consumers tends to switch to Booking ; (iii) DON captures almost nothing in the demand.
