Antoine Bertheau (CREST) – “Unexpected worker quits and within firm labor adjustment”, joint work with Pierre Cahuc (CREST, Polytechnique, IZA and CEPR)

Abstract: This paper assesses the effects of unexpected worker separations on firm’s and co-workers’ outcomes. Unexpected separations are identified using Danish administrative data about death and accidents. Unexpected separations reduce employment, which recovers its level in about two years. Meanwhile, the hours of work and the remuneration of co-workers increase. We devise a search an matching model with intra-firm bargaining which shows that the adjustments of employment, wages and hours worked depend on the elasticity of labor demand, of labor supply, on the bargaining power of workers, on the cost of job vacancies and on labor market frictions. Relying on the exogenous separations due to death or accident, we estimate these key structural parameters .
